The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has initiated preliminary steps on implementing Mobile Number Portability (MNP) which would enable mobile users to change their present mobile numbers among their favourite service providers.
TRCSL Senior official told Daily Mirror, after implementing the system, people can choose the better service provider of their option without changing their present number.
“Mobile number portability is a network function that allows a mobile subscriber to switch service provider, while retaining their existing mobile telephone number,” the official said.
"Today, people have to change their existing mobile number when changing service providers. Some people find it difficult to change their numbers, as they have to inform all their contacts about the new number,” he said.
“A preliminary study is underway and upon the outcome, we will discuss with the operators to check the best way to implement the system," he said.
“Many countries have implemented MNP services in their telecommunication networks”, the official added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
