The decision to impose strict travel restrictions for three whole days shows the government’s discrimination towards a section of the minority, an Opposition Muslim MP said today.
SJB Colombo District MP Mujibur Rahaman told a press conference that the travel restrictions were not imposed as per health experts' advise, but were a result of the government's racial based attitude.
“Health experts were stressing for travel restrictions and lockdown since April this year, but the government turned a deaf ear to their advice. Finally, travel restrictions were imposed and it was announced that people could venture out based on NIC digits. However, it was announced suddenly yesterday morning that people cannot go out at all. This is racial based decision of the government,” Mr. Rahaman charged.
“Government showed the similar attitude when an issue arose on last rites for COVID deaths. Burying of COVID victims was allowed only after the Pakistan Prime Minister made a request,” he added.
“If our Ramadan festival had fallen in April, the government would have gone for a complete lockdown by now. Unfortunately, it fell during this month,” he added. (Yohan Perera)
