The meeting of the representatives of the UNP-led trade unions and party seniors held at Sirikotha was disrupted today when some participants became aggressive, party sources said.
“Trade Union members became hostile when expressing the issues they were facing,” the source said.
The hostile shouting began when party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was leaving the Sirikotha auditorium after addressing the meeting.
Mr Wickremesinghe and other seniors were leaving to attend the party's Working Committee meeting.
He stopped for a while to chat with the union members when they started heckling at him.
“We are still to get our promotions and increments," they were heard saying.
Mr. Wickremesinghe' requested them to calm down.
After Mr Wickremesinghe's departure, former MP Palitha Range Bandara who spoke to union members assured them that the party seniors would meet union members to address their issues.
However, some union members started shouting slogans outside Sirikotha premises.
"Apita bedila Inna be. (We cannot allow a division in the party), they shouted. (Yohan Perera)
