US and SL Navy to curb nuclear trafficking

Colombo, Jan 02 (Daily Mirror) - The United States National Nuclear Security Administration and the Sri Lanka Navy are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at preventing the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials.

The Cabinet of Ministers has given its nod to the proposal for this agreement which has navigated through various regulatory bodies in Sri Lanka. 

The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of National Planning have thoroughly examined the draft MoU. Furthermore, the Attorney General has given the necessary clearance, endorsing the legal aspects of the agreement.

The proposal was presented by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Defence to sign the proposed Memorandum of Understanding.
