The US Ambassador in Colombo Julie Chung had controlled the Aragalaya people with one hand, and used the other hand to control former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Minister Wimal Weerawansa charged today.
He told the Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya event in Kegalle that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's biggest problem was that he used to remain silent when Ambassador Chung commented.
He said that the US envoy had regular meetings with the former president in recent months.
"Everyone knew this, but no one said anything because they were scared for him. Envoy Chung visited the former president's house at Mirihana on the very day his official residence was attacked by the protesters. She came and apologised for what had happened that day. She said she belongs to the Roman Catholic faith and thereby prayed to God invoke relief for Mr. Rajapaksa," Weerawansa alleged.
Weerawansa further alleged that Gotabaya was trapped in the US Ambassador's web.
"All decisions that the former president took, he conveyed to envoy Chung and then implemented it as per her instructions. When the president took the decision to remove the protestors, envoy Chung prevented it, claiming it would affect the IMF loan," Weerawansa charged. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
