NPP MP Vijitha Herath today revealed that USD 5 million which was credited to a Union Bank account belonging to the GAC Shipping Ltd. in Sri Lanka as part of the compensation for the New Diamond disaster had been transferred to an overseas account and hence demanded an investigation into the incident.
The MP told Parliament that USD 5 million has been credited by the German Deutsche Bank to the account of the GAC Shipping Ltd. at Union Bank in Sri Lanka on behalf of the Singaporean Company called Smith, between January and May, 2022 and that the same amount has been transferred to an overseas account.
He said an investigation should be conducted to ascertain what had happened to the USD 5 million which was received as compensation for the New Diamond disaster.
The MP said a report should be submitted in Parliament on the matter. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
