SJB MP Dilip Wedaarachchi's son, former Chairman of the Tangalle Urban Council Ravindu Wedaarachchi and his wife Nethmi Harindika Silva have been arrested in connection with obstructing duties of a police officer and alleged attempt of assault.
Police said both suspects were arrested after surrendered to the Weeraketiya Police.
They would be produced in the Walasmullaa Magistrate's Court.
A complaint was lodged with the Weeraketiya Police Station last week by a police sergeant attached to Expressway duties at the Bedigama interchange claiming that the MPs son had obstructed duties.
According to the police, the former chairman was loading a refrigerator in an unprotected manner into the back of a cab was about to enter Colombo from the Bedigama interchange on the expressway on Wednesday evening when a police sergeant on duty at the scene informed him that it was unsafe and dangerous and that he could not be allowed to enter.
At that moment, the Chairman and his wife in the cab got angry and tried to interrupt the police sergeant’s duty and verbally attacked him with harsh words.
A video of the incident was circulated on social media and police were looking to arrest them over the complaint and were avoiding the police a few days.
Former chairman Ravindu had also earlier claimed that a police officer at the scene had pulled him by his shirt and tried to hit him. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
