Due to the heavy rains, the water capacity of all reservoirs has exceeded 50 percent, Irrigation (Hydrology) Director Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara Bandara said.
He told the media that some reservoirs had started spilling and several others were about to spill.
Six spill gates of the Deduru Oya reservoir were opened three feet high and started releasing water with a capacity of 11,200 cubic inches per second. Accordingly, the waters of the low-lying areas of the Deduru Oya will increase, and those living downstream are requested to be vigilant over sudden floods.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Attanagalu Oya has reached spill level, and a minor flood situation was reported in the Attanagalla, Gampaha, Ja-Ela, and Katana divisional secretariat divisions.
The current minor flood situation may increase depending on the rainfall this evening. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
