The Welisara Naval Base, which was isolated two months ago due to the COVID-19 outbreak within the base, will be reopened from tomorrow (23), Navy Spokesman Isuru Sooriyabandara said.
“The operations and regular duties of the base will commence in several stages according to the guidelines issued by the health authorities,” he told Daily Mirror.
On June 20, Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe in writing informed the Navy Commander that the Welisara Naval Base as a coronavirus-free zone.
The Complex, which houses nearly 4000 naval personnel and their families, was locked down for nearly two months after 30 naval personnel tested positive for COVID-19 infection.
According to the health authorities, a total number of 901 COVID-19 positive cases were reported from the Navy and as at today 785 personnel have recovered while 116 continue to receive treatment in hospitals.(Dharshana Sanjeewa)
