The Navy said that the Navy’s Covid-19 cluster had been completely controlled as the last three Covid-19 positive sailors recovered and were discharged from the hospital today.
Navy Spokesman Captain Indika De Silva said that recently recovered sailors would be undergoing a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine, adhering to healthcare guidelines.
A total of 906 sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy contracted COVID-19 creating a massive cluster.
“All 906 sailors who were infected with the Coronavirus have recovered as of this morning,” the spokesman said.
The first COVID-19 case from the Navy was an officer attached to the Welisara Navy Camp who was tested positive for the virus on April 22.
All sailors in the barracks at the Welisara Camp were accordingly quarantined following the detection.
In the immediate aftermath of the detection of the first Navy patient, PCR tests were conducted on those who shared the same lodging quarters and office spaces with at the Welisara Camp.
As per the results of initial PCR testing, another 29 sailors were tested positive for the Covid-19.
This resulted in the authorities closing the Welisara Navy Camp and declaring it as an isolated area by the Navy Commander on April 23.
All those at the Welisara Navy Camp were subject to quarantine and PCR tests and all sailors who went on leave were ordered to return to base for PCR tests.
The Welisara Naval Base resumed its normal operations on June 22 following the healthcare guidelines issued by the health authorities.
