Colombo, September 23 (Daily Mirror) - National People's Power member Sunil Handunnetti said that abolishing the Executive Presidency remains a priority for a government headed by newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, a day after Dissanayake beat Sajith Premadasa in the Presidential election, Handunnetti said, "Today you have elected this country's final Executive President."
"There will no longer be Executive Presidents. We want the public's support for that."
He also hinted at heavy cutbacks on perks offered to politicians.
"There is a promise we made to the people, that politicians won't need what people don't need," he said.
"We will keep that promise," he added.
