Aluthgama crash: Six suspended

Six officials of the Railways including the engine driver, his assistant, the head guard and the under guard and the two Station Masters who were on duty at the Aluthgama Railway Station at the time of the accident had been suspended until the investigations were over, the department of Railways said.
A train transporting fuel from Galle to Colombo crashed into the back of a Diesel-Multiple Unit (Power-set) which was at the Aluthgama Railway Station this morning, the Control Room said.
The accident at 12.55 this morning resulted in derailing of a compartment and damaging a section of the track.
The train was not carrying any fuel at the time of the crash and none of those in either of the trains were injured.
The Railway Control Room said the track was repaired and cleared for use.
The cause of the accident is still not known. The Police and the railway authorities are conducting investigations.
At least 68 passengers were injured in a train accident at Pothuhera station, Kurunegala on April 30.
Five employees of the Railways Department who were on duty at the time of the Potuhera train accident had been interdicted following the accident.
Investigation into the accident is in progress.
