The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organisation today condemned the issuance of a letter by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to the Attorney General alleging that the BBS had brought Buddhism into grave disrepute, and challenged the BASL for a debate to discuss the accuracy of contents of the letter.
The BASL had in a letter urged Attorney General Palitha Fernando to take steps regarding the damage which had allegedly been done by the BBS to Buddhism and Sri Lanka as a whole. “The letter issued by the BASL is not factual. We are challenging the BASL to show evidence to back up their claim that we had caused damage to Buddhism and the country.
The BASL also says the government was constitutionally obliged to protect Buddhism. But we don’t see anything done by the government to protect Buddhism,” BBS General Secretary Galagodatte Gnanasara Thera told a news conference.
Its Executive Committee Member Dilantha Vithanage said that the letter of the BASL was a childish act.
“This is an attempt to gain prominence by accusing us. Accusing us has become a habit for those who are past their prime,” he said.
