However no suspects have been arrested so far by the police. Statements had been recorded by the CID from policemen who were on duty and also policemen who were at the Chilaw police station and Chilaw SP’s office but no one had been arrested so far in connection with the shooting.
The police recovered swords, poles, glass bottles and petrol bombs following the clashes where fisherman Anthony Fernando (28) succumbed to gunshot injuries while protesting over the recent oil price hike.
Following his funeral the CID recorded at least 25 statements mainly from the residents and fishermen who were involved in the protest.
The Army deployed six platoons to the Chilaw and Wennappuwa areas and are continuing to conduct routine patrolling in the area.
The CID team led by an ASP was deployed to Chilaw in the aftermath of the shooting by Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakone and additional security had been given to the Chilaw police station and the Chilaw SP office. (Supun Dias)
