The Police Sergeant attached to the CID and six other suspects who were allegedly involved in the credit card fraud to the tune of Rs.40 million using hundreds of counterfeit credit cards were remanded till February 1 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
Police Sergeant S.A.S. Gunawardena was taken into police custody along with the goods which were alleged to have been purchased using counterfeit credit cards. It was also reported that the suspect police sergeant had successful carried out investigations into several credit card fraud cases on earlier occasions.
According to the CID, the suspects had allegedly withdrawn money by preparing counterfeit credit cards using forged documents. The CID further informed court that an identification parade is scheduled to be held to identify other suspects in the case and said that they are conducting further investigations into the incident.
Having considered the submissions, Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne ordered that the seven suspects be remanded till February 1. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
