A special team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was to probe the seven killings of women in the Kahawatta area, IGP N.K Illangakoon said.

One suspect has been arrested by the police so far. According to IGP Illangakoon the suspect had accepted that he committed three of the killings of which one was due to a personnel dispute.

Four large teams from Ratnapura under an ASP had been sent to the Kahawatta area to arrest the rest of the suspects involved.

“A special security plan is also being set up to protect the two villagers where the killings took place. If we need the assistance of the Special Task Force (STF) we will get it as well,” he said.

Most of the women between 45-60 years of age were found dead after been strangled to death by the suspects. The incidents took place in the Dimbulwela village in Kahawatta. (SD)
