Democratic People’s Front Leader Mano Ganeshan claimed that two of his campaign teams had come under attack in Nawalapitiya this evening injuring two people and damaging atleast two vehicles.

However when contacted DIG of the Police Elections Desk, Gamini Navaratna said that there were no incidents reported in Nawalapitiya today and that the area in the Kandy District where polling was annulled last week was calm.

He added that hundreds of security personnel had also been deployed in Nawalapitiya as the area prepares for a re-poll on April 20. “The situation in Nawalapitiya is very calm. We have not received any complaints to date. Security in that area is very tight,” DIG Navaratne said.

However Ganeshan said that Nawalapitiya had been ‘plagued’ by violence and due to the attacks on his party supporters, he now feared of being attacked himself. “My supporters are being attacked continuously. I now fear that I too will be attacked very soon,” Ganeshan said.

Ganeshan is also expected to ask for an increase in his security and has discussed the issue with IGP Mahinda Balasuriya.
