Pieces of glass have been discovered in an injection vial from the Ratnapura Hospital, while a dust-like substance has been discovered in another injection vial from the Padukka Hospital.

The Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) today revealed this, urging Health Ministry officials to immediately ban the stocks under the relevant batch number of these injection vials.

The contaminated injection vial was discovered in Ratnapura on August 12. The vial of the drug called Acyclovir Sodium which was administered to patients suffering from chickenpox bore batch number NP3019A and was manufactured in India.

The other injection vial from Padukka Hospital bore batch number 3036/3037. The vial contained the drug promethazine hydrochloride and this had been discovered on August 22, while attempting to administer the drug in the emergency treatment unit of the hospital.

HSTUA Chairman SamanRatnapriya said they had lodged written complaints about the incidents but the batch numbers had not been banned yet.

Meanwhile, Director of the Medical Supplies Division (MSD), Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe confirmed that the MSD had received a complaint about the injection vials and added that they were waiting for the report provided by the National Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory to take action against the incident.
