The Sri Lanka Customs seized 56,000 litres of ethanol and 19,560 kilos of acetone that were imported illegal to the country by evading tax payments amounting Rs.19.9 million. They were imported from Malaysia.

The importer, a company registered in Wellampitiya had imported five containers of acetone and had paid Rs.8.3 million as duty.

But inside the container the customs officers found the stock of alcohol and a stock of acetone more than the amount he paid the duty.

Acetone is used as a solvent for various industries such as a chemical to manufacture paint and thinner, Deputy Director of Customs Sisira De Silva said. (SD)
