Death toll rises to 15: DMC

At least 15 people were killed and 12 others went missing due to the torrential rains lashed in most parts of the country, the Disaster Management Centre said.

The DMC said 12 people had been injured while 937, 671 people belonging to 258, 319 families were affected by the inclement weather.
About 83, 510 people who were displaced have been sheltered in 413 camps set up in the affected areas, the DMC said.

According to the DMC, 11 out of 15 deaths were reported in Badiulla district while the other four deaths were reported in Kandy, Baticaloa, Ampara and Puttalam districts.

The vascular movement on the Badulla-Welimada Road came to a standstill this morning due to an earth slip which occurred near the Morethota Temple on the Badulla-Welimada Road.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department said heavy rains exceeding 100 mm could be expected in most parts of the country particularly in the Eastern, Uva, Central, North-Central, North-Western provinces and in the Hambantota district.

It said low pressure area had intensified into a depression again and was located about 400 km east to Hambantota, which was expected to move northwards affecting the weather of the country and surrounding sea area.( Ajith Siriwardana and Palitha Ariayawansa)
