Depression moving away from SL: Met Dep.

The Meteorology Department said today the depression in the South-east Bay of Bengal had intensified into a cyclonic storm and was expected to move towards Indian east coast.

It said heavy rains exceeding 100mm could be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
Showers may spread to the North-Western province while the wind speed could strengthen over the island and surrounding sea areas, it said.

The Met Department predicted temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, the duty meteorologist Sajith Wickramasuriya said the highest rainfall of 120.5 mm was reported in Angoda while Colombo, Kandy, Ratnapura, and Katunayake were reported as 84.9 mm, 24.4 mm, 93.4mm and 61.1 mm respectively during the past 24 hours ending in 8.30 a.m. today.
