The DMK and the PMK on Friday opposed the reported move of the Central to supply two naval warships to Sri Lanka by 2017-18, to strengthen the island nation’s capabilities to guard its maritime boundaries.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi, writing for the party organ ‘Murasoli’, said the Centre’s move had strengthened the oft-repeated charge that New Delhi had been helping Colombo, ignoring the interests of the Tamils and Indian fishermen. He asked the Centre to give up this plan immediately.
Meanwhile, PMK founder S Ramadoss said the Centre’s decision had caused pain to the people of TN since New Delhi’s offer had come at a time when the Lankan Tamils were suffering and attacks on Indian fishermen continued.
He said there was no threat to Lanka since India was the only neighbouring country and Indian Navy looks after the safety in seafront. There are reasons to be apprehensive that the warships would be used against TN fishermen.
