Four suspects were taken into custody by the Mount Lavinia police for robbing a lorry with dry rations worth Rs.3 million which was bound to Akuressa, Greater Colombo DIG Daya Samaraweera said.
The incident was reported last Wednesday at the Maliban junction after one of the suspects who pretended that he was an Inspector attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) had requested to search the lorry.
“A white van had arrived at the scene with the other suspects and kidnapped the driver. The dry rations in the lorry were later unloaded to another lorry in Bandaragama”, he said.
“The driver was asked to phone the owner of the lorry and tell him that he will get delayed to come to the destination”, DIG Samaraweera said.
“We arrested the suspects by tracing the mobile numbers. Among the arrested suspects is an inmate who escaped from the Kalutara prison. We are still looking for one more suspect”, he added.
They suspects are residents of Ambalangoda, Beddagana, Madiwela and Kalutara. The suspects are now being questioned by the police after obtaining detention orders from the Mount Lavinia Magistrate.
