Dubai’s police reversed their role of jailing criminals and acted this time to help a defendant regain his freedom so he will reunite with his four-year-old daughter, whose mother had left the country, newspapers reported on Sunday.
The Women and Child Protection Division at Dubai’s police said it acted after receiving information from the Sri Lankan’s neighbour that he has just been imprisoned and his daughter was left with her after her mother’s departure from the UAE.
Director of the Human Rights Department at Dubai’s Police Brigadier Mohammed Al Murr said his section succeeded in reaching an out-of-court settlement in which it paid the debt owed by the Sri Lankan to RakBank and had him released from prison.
“We then bought air tickets for him and his daughter to allow him to go to his country as there was a court order to deport him. We also gave extra money so he will manage when he reaches his country,” he said.
The division’s director Major Shahin Al Mazmi said the case took place in February when the girl’s Filipina mother left the UAE and her husband was sacked by his employers because of accumulating debt.
He said the man started to wash cars to earn his living and was taking his daughter with him before he was seized by the police.
