Representatives of the Singapore- based Emirates International Oil Company which supplied the sub standard stock of petrol to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) arrived in the country a few days ago on a fact finding mission about the allegations against them, Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha said today.

Minister Premajayantha told Daily Mirror that a detailed report would be furnished by the CPC to be submitted to the Company as part of the formalities in claiming compensations for the losses incurred due to the use of this low quality petrol.

A stock of 20,000 tonnes of sub standard petrol was imported to the country in June, 2011, and 17,500 tonnes of it was released to the market despite warnings after laboratory tests.

There are complaints received by the CPC that the engines of more than 5000 vehicles were damaged due to the use of such petrol. Besides, a number of equipment at filling stations were also damaged.

The Minister said that the CPC had lodged a complaint with the Company based in Singapore and staked a claim.

“After formalities are completed, they will decide whether to compensate or not,”

Asked abort the payments for the persons whose vehicles were damaged, he said that the process was still underway.

“We are gathering information and processing them accordingly,” he said.  (KB)
