President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today that elections to the Northern Provincial Council would be held soon after the resettlement and the registration of voters in the province were completed.

Speaking to newspaper editors at Temple Trees, he said this in response to a question by an editor who asked why elections to the Northern Provincial Council were being delayed.

Replying to a question from another editor on whether devolution of power to the people of the North would not have precluded many of the issues raised in the UNSG’s Panel report, the president said that the government did not intend to pander to the LTTE but hoped to satisfy the aspirations of the people.

An editor asked what action the government intended to take with regard to the accusations made in the Panel report. The president said the accusations had  all been rejected by the government but that it would not remain silent as it was duty bound to make the world aware of the truth,

He said discussions had already been held with foreign diplomats, ministers and governments in order to inform the international community.
