Former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge said that if the Opposition did not act properly and unseat this government democratically, the people would revolt as has happened in some
Mrs. Kumaratunge made this observation on Saturday at a function held in honour of the political leaders and all who helped to initiate the Udawalawe and Chandrika Wewa schemes, after opening stage 2 of the Halmillaara scheme.
The meeting was held at the Kottawatta Village Hotel in Udawalawe.
The water project was completed at a cost of Rs.1.5 million by the Embilipitiya Dinakara Community Organisation with the collaboration of the Kandy Rotary Club.
Mrs. Kumaratung e expressed her gratitude to the people for remembering the services rendered by the former prime ministers S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike, Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Dudley Senanayake and minister C.P. de Silva who had pioneered the Udawalawe and Chadrika W ew a schemes. She said some of the present day leaders had forgotten their services to the nation
She also recalled how Mr. C.P. de Silva named the new tank as Chandrika Wewa when she was only 10 years old.
“Many politicians and other supporters asked me to amend the Constitution and contest the presidency for a third time. But I refused as I am not greedy for power. Things are different now and everyone wants to get rich through politics. When I was in power I did everything possible to control corruption and fraud and strengthened institutions like the Bribery Commission.” she said.
Mrs. Kumaratunge appealed to the people to unite and help create a corruption free, economically flourishing country with international co-operation.
