The Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs said that 84,390 families run by single mothers will receive financial support from the Government’s ‘Divi Naguma’ programme for women in need.

Ministry officials said single mothers engaged in vegetable cultivation, animal husbandry, fisheries and self employment will be given loans, fertilizer subsidies and other special benefits.

Ministry officials said that single mothers need adequate support to improve their living conditions and to become more financially independent and secure.

“According to a census conducted by the Ministry we have found that the highest number of families run by single mothers is in the North and East. However we still have not been able to gauge the number of single families in the area or the rest of the country,” an official said. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
