The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) today called on the Higher Education Minister to follow the direction of the Supreme Court and postponed the leadership training programme scheduled to commence on Monday.

The IUSF alleged that the Higher Education Ministry announcing that the leadership training will be carried out as scheduled was a disregards to the judicial decision given out by the Supreme Court.

Further the IUSF noted that they condemned the move by the Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake to carryout the “military training” and that the Supreme Court decision should not be disregarded as it would be treated as contempt of Court.

The Supreme Court on Friday(20th) directed the Attorney General to consider instructing the relevant authorities to postpone for one week the impugned mandatory training in military camps for the students who are eligible to enter the State Universities.

The Court made this direction in the wake of the training for the first batch which is scheduled to be commenced on May 23, 2011 at several Army Camps.

The Bench comprised Justices K.Sripavan, Chandra Ekanayake and Suresh Chandra.

Students for Human Rights filed a fundamental rights petition challenging the decision of the Higher Education Ministry allegedly compelling the students, who are eligible to enter University, into undergoing in-house training within military camps without their consent. (Daily Mirror online)
