The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has established a police restructuring and supervision committee to look into malpractices and inefficiencies of police stations and police projects island wide.
The committee is headed by Central Province DIG Gamini Navaratne.
“We have been receiving many complaints from the public that a number of police stations are not taking steps to resolve their complaints. We have also been informed that there are several inefficient projects carried out by the police department”, DIG Navaratne said.
“We will make surprise visits to such police stations. The main objective is to tackle inefficiency in the police department. Our theme is a people friendly prestigious professional police service. We will work and reduce inefficiency in the police”, he said.
The public relief office at the Police Headquarters which was set up on the initiative of IGP Balasuriya receives most of the complaints about shortcomings and negligence caused by police stations.
The committee will take steps to evolve a mechanism to provide a satisfactory service to the public and also to reduce shortcomings in the police that cause hardships to the public, DIG Navaratne added.
The secretariat of the committee will be set up within the Police Headquarters. The committee will comprise of nine DIG’s and 15 SSP’s and SP’s.
