Forgiven or forgotten?

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials have been made to eat their words and bow down to the superiority of Sri Lanka team captain Mahela Jayawardene, as SLC’s much-publicized threat to discuss Jayawardene’s purported breach of SLC contract by communicating directly with Daily Mirror has proved to be an empty whimper and a farce.

In a media release that received huge attention around the world, SLC Media Manager on December 22 claimed that Jayawardene’s act of communicating directly with a newspaper would be discussed at the SLC Ex-Co meeting.

“…Thereafter, when it was carried in an article in a local newspaper, Mahela Jayawardena made his concerns known to the SLC Office Bearers. The subsequent release of his views through the Manager, direct to the media is a breach of their respective contracts on the part of both the Captain and the Manager and this matter will be taken up for discussion when the Executive Committee next meets” said the media release.

SLC President Upali Dharmadasa said the issue was not discussed at the SLC Ex-Co as promised.

“The matter didn’t come up for discussion at the Ex-Co” Dharmadasa explained when he was asked why it was not discussed as the Media Release promised.

SLC Chief Executive Ajit Jayasekara said that he was not aware if it was discussed. “It is not the Ex-Co but the office bearers who take such decisions. I don’t attend those high-policy making meetings. I only attend normal Ex-Co meetings” said Jayasekara and added that it was not he who issued the media release.

SLC Media Manager did not answer his mobile phone when Daily Mirror tried to contact him last evening.

In an emailed letter to Daily Mirror on December 21, Jayawardene said he has lost confidence in dealing with SLC after a confidential letter he handed over to the SLC was published in an article in “Daily Mirror” on December 19.

“As a result of what has transpired, I have lost all confidence in dealing with SLC in the future”.

Mahela said in his letter.
