Four inmates managed to escape from the Trincomalee prison last night by breaking the fanlight with iron rods placed seven feet from the ground inside the cell.

A search operation has been initiated by the Trincomalee police to track down the runaway inmates, police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said.

The chief jailer of the prison informed the Trincomalee Harbour Police immediately after he was informed by the prison guards about their escape.

They were in the remand prison over crime and extortion related charges. (Supun Dias)
