UNP General Secretary and parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said today the President would violate election laws if he attempted to gain political advantage by going ahead with the planned address to the nation on the Geneva issue.
Soon after he met the ElectionsCommissioner he told journalists that the President and some of the ministers had repeatedly violated media ethics during the election campaign.
“We have learnt that the President has planned to address the nation on the Geneva issue. We have no issue about him addressing the nation on national issues. But on this occasion at the eve of an election he is doing so to gain political advantage. President is reported to have told an election rally at Piliyandala that the people should vote for the Government in the elections to the Western and Southern Provincial Councils to defeat the Geneva resolution. It is clear that the Government is trying to campaign hiding behind the Geneva issue. We informed the ElectionsCommissioner about this,” Mr. Attanayake said.
He said the Polls Chief had assured he would look into the matter and promised to see that no party violates election laws.
Mr. Attanayake said the UNP would fully support the Government to overcome any crisis that might arise as a result of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution.
