Heavy rains in drought- hit areas

The Meteorology Department said today several drought affected areas such as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala and Vavuniya districts received heavy rains during the last twenty four hours ending at 8.30 a.m. this morning.

The Duty Meteorologist Channa Rodrigo said the highest rain fall of 113 mm was reported in Matale while Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa and Moneragala districts received a rainfall of 66.8 mm, 61.2 mm, 58 mm and 18.9 mm respectively.

The Meteorology Department said thundershowers accompanied by strong winds could be expected over the island during the afternoon and night.

It forecast rains during the next few days as well.

Meanwhile, landslides warning issued by the National Building Research Bureau (NBRO) in Kegalle, Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts will be in effect till 6.00 p.m. this evening.(Ajith Siriwardana)
