Peoples Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) today said that 18,000 people who are still in welfare villages in Chettikulum and around 3000 IDPs in the Puttalam District are unlikely to get the chance to vote in the upcoming Local Government election.

PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi stated, that this had been confirmed at a meeting which the Commissioner of Elections had with the political party secretaries recently.

He recalled that it was mentioned at this meeting that the commissioner had no provisions to ensure the voting rights of these persons according to the existing laws relevant to the Local Government elections. (YP)
