The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) stated that the Inspector General of Police and other police officers would be sued for being cowards unless they implement the country’s laws during the upcoming presidential election.

BASL president Upul Jayasuriya told a media conference held at BASL headquarters it would not hesitate to take legal action against the IGP and other police officers if they refrained from implementing election laws.

He stated the police media spokesman had told media that 80 percent of cutouts and posters had been removed by the police in Colombo so far and he maintained that police should be fully committed to implement presidential election laws irrespective of any pressure against them.

“The IGP and other police officers can be prosecuted for cowardism, if they did not act in accordance with the election law. They are duty bound to implement the election law,” Mr. Jayasuriya stated.(Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
