Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa today said that he would conduct an inquiry into the circumstances that led to a commotion in Parliament during the budget speech on Monday.

The Speaker was responding to remarks made by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that the security of his MPs was at stake inside the House under the present circumstances.  Mr. Wickremesinghe said that security of individual MPs had been guaranteed in terms of traditions adopted in the House of Common.

“What shall we do if our security is not guaranteed inside the Chamber of the House?” he asked.

On Monday, a few UNP MPs who displayed banners as a mark of protest against the budget were manhandled by government members. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
