The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti today accused the Bribery Commission of attempting to sweep under the carpet the investigation against its Chairman by needlessly delaying the investigation.
He said the complaint was made a month ago but nothing had happened so far.
“We made the complaint on January 1 but we have not been informed yet whether an investigation was being carried out or not. People have a right to complain against the Commissioner because he is appointed by the President. The Bribery Commission is trying to sweep this under the carpet by wasting time. This will only result in the people losing faith in the Commission,” Mr. Handunnetti said.
He said the Government should make a statement on the status of the investigation because the Commissioner was a public servant.
Mr. Hadunnetti who spoke to the media soon after submitting a letter to the bribery commission secretary alleged that neither the president nor the cabinet had made any comment on this matter and urged the Commissioner to resign from the post at least temporarily so that an impartial investigation can be carried out.
