The United National Party (UNP) today requested the Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya to be firm in upholding the law at the coming Local Government election.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a news conference that the Election Commissioner should be bold in taking steps with regard to the election laws. “Laws should be upheld from the nomination day until the results are declared,” he said.

He made this point by stating that the election laws are being blatantly violated during this Local Government election.

Mr. Jayasuriya charged that the state resources are being used by the government politicians openly during this election. He said the election campaign is conducted by the ruling party in official residences of government servants.

Mr. Jayasuriya also explained that this election is an opportunity for the people to show a red light to the government which is marred with corruption. He said people should use their vote to put a stop for the continuous suppression of rights.
