The crisis within the main opposition UNP is likely to take a crucial stage today with Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya due to handover some proposals with regard to party reforms, to party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Analysts see it as a crucial move as the party’s parliamentary group meeting is scheduled for tomorrow.
Informed sources said the details of Mr. Jayasuriya’s proposals were not known but he had already stressed that the party should come out strongly to face the government at the upcoming local government election.
However, a UNP reformist MP told the Daily Mirror that their group would definitely propose the name of Mr. Jayasuriya as the party leader at the Parliamentary Group meeting.
The MP who commented on speculations, that there was a move to suspend three reformist MPs from the party, said it was the members of the other camp who should be suspended as they were responsible for the downfall of the party.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake who responded to these matters said the party would go on with its usual activities without any changes despite claims made by the reformists.
Mr. Wickremesinghe is expected to leave for Matara today to participate in an anti-government protest organised by UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera
