The Open University lecturer, who was admitted to hospital with stab injuries, is in a stable condition, Accident Services Training Coordinator and Team Leader Pushpa Ramyani de Soysa said.
“She is now conscious and has been taken off the ventilator machine,” she told Daily Mirror Online a short while ago.
Meanwhile, the suspect, who is alleged to have stabbed the lecturer, is still in the Kalubowila Hospital ICU. Hospital’s Deputy Director Dr. L. Muhandiram said the suspect is still unconscious and that his vital functions were being supported with the aid of a ventilator.
“Several toxicology and blood tests have been carried out and we are hoping the patient’s condition improves,” he added.
The suspect -- Shivagnanasundaram Surendrajith -- a doctor and resident of Jaffna is alleged to have brutally stabbed the Open University’s Legal Studies Department Head Yasodara Kathirgamathamby yesterday. The motive for the stabbing is unknown but it is believed to be connected to some academic issue.
