Major ATM card scam busted

Police have busted a major ATM card scam amounting to Rs. 12 million in the country, mainly in Colombo and its suburbs, police said.

A special Criminal Investigation Department team arrested two suspects in connection with the scam from Ratmalana with the equipment believed to have been used for this scam, police said.

“One of these suspect was arrested while using a forged credit card at a filling station at Ratmalana,” Police Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said.

He also said that these suspects have been withdrawing large amounts of sums from ATM machines from three leading banks in Colombo.

The Managers of the card centers of Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank and Nations Trust Bank have lodged a complaint with the Police in this regard. The total sum believed to have been illegally withdrawn is Rs.11, 896,600.

Police investigations have found that the local suspects are linked to an international racket that is widespread.
