Matara clash: 56 UNPers released on bail

A group of 56 suspects, on remand following a clash between two UNP factions in Matara on October 5, were enlarged on Rs 200,000 personal bail each by the Matara Chief Magistrate Ruwan Sisira Kumara today.
Six suspects, including Sudath Chandrasekara, the private secretary to the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Kithsiri Kahatapitiya a former Western Provincial Council opposition leader surrendered to the Matara Police this morning. They had later been produced before the Matara magistrate who enlarged them on bail.
Ex-minister Suranimala Rajapaksa, Lakshman Wijemanna, Sandith Samarasinghe and Indika de Silva were the other four who surrendered.
Four others, including UNP Agalawatta organiser Gamini Nallaperuma, were remanded until today (22) for an identification parade.(Krishan Jeewak Jayaruk)
