The Meteorology Department said today strong winds (South-west monsoonal winds) were expected over the country especially along the western slopes of the Central hills at times.

Issuing a severe weather advisory it said showers or thundershowers were expected at times in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and several spells of showers could also be expected in the Western province and in the Galle and Matara districts while showers may spread to the North-Western province as well.

The Department warned the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant as deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle and the Eastern deep sea areas would turn rough at times as the wind speeds could intensify to reach as much as 70 to 80 kmph.
