With the recent raid on an orphanage in Rawatawatta last week by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), the police have stepped up investigations on such places where underage pregnant girls are looked after and taken care of, to ascertain whether they have violated terms of the Penal Code.

The police said that the NCPA is investigating the raid they carried out at the orphanage to verify whether the guardians had violated several conditions of the Penal Code.

During the raid which was carried out in Rawatawatta last Wednesday the NCPA with the assistance of the Moratuwa police found 65 children between the ages of one and five and 13 underage pregnant girls.

The police have taken statements from 12 young girls, 12 persons who were working at the orphanage as well.

“If the pregnancy is visible when the girl is 16 years old, it gives the basic idea that there is a culprit and a crime had being committed,” the police said.

“If the guardians are unable to give the police the information about the suspects who committed the crimes, then it is an offence,” the police added. (Supun Dias)
