UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara warned that more UNP Parliamentarians will join the 25 UNP members who have threatened to sit independently in parliament if UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasingha does not address the leadership crisis soon.
Speaking to Daily Mirror online, Jayasekara said that the number of MPs willing to sit independently in parliament had already increased to more than 25 and the figure would keep increasing.
“If the Leader continues to be more stubborn, more MPs will join us. As a party we cannot continue like this. The MPs are heartbroken and depressed,” MP Jayasekara said.
Reacting to the UNP Leader’s statement that none of the 25 MPs had conveyed to him or the Speaker the decision to sit independently in Parliament, Jayasekara said that it was for this reason that a meeting had been sought.
“How can we convey any decision to him if he is not willing to meet us? Just recently he met President Mahinda Rajapakse without even informing the party Deputy Leader or the Secretary. He made a decision within a few hours to meet the President. However he cannot give his own MPs even five minutes of his time,” Jayasekara said.
Chaos and fear has also broken out within the UNP after the latest cross over of six UNP MPs to the government recently. Prominent party members have urged for a revamp in order to prevent more members from crossing over.
According to Jayasekara, the only aim to call for reforms in the party is to ensure the stability of the UNP and prevent more members from crossing over to the government. (Daily Mirror online)
