However, Deputy Director M.D. Dayanada said the cold weather in the district was not something extraordinary as it was an annual occurrence mainly in January. The cold weather will persist for another three to four days, he stressed.
He hopes that the situation will improve by today and the temperature in Nuwara-Eliya may rise to about 4 degrees Celsius in the next couple of days.
Mr. Dayananda said the current extreme cold weather is prevalent only in Nuwara Eliya in the Central Province and added the lowest recorded temperature in the district was reported on July 30, 1914. with the temperature being -3.7 degrees Celsius
Normally during this period the country will experience dry weather except for occasional showers in the North-East for the next few weeks he said.
Meanwhile, additional District Secretary, Nuwara-Eliya, U.W.D.U.M.A Amarasekara said vegetable cultivation has been affected due to the ground frost.
