NCDs on the rise

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena today revealed that the percentage of individuals suffering from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) among the urban population will increase up to 75% by 2025 if effective measures are not taken control the situation.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Health Minister’s Forum in Geneva, Switzerland today Minister Sirisena said that 50% of the urban population and 10% of the rural population suffer from NCDs at the moment. Among the most prevalent NCDs are diabetes, cancers kidney diseases, high blood pressure and mental depression.

According to Minister Sirisena, the annual number of deaths caused by NCDs is roughly 126,000. (Lakna Paranamanna)
