The National Freedom Front (NFF) said today it would launch a campaign on June 3 to collect signatures for a petition demanding that the government removes police and land power from the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

Referring to the Northern Provincial Council elections, the NFF said the holding elections there would only lead to separatism in the country and this was why the NFF had decided to garner the people’s support to urge the government to rescind police and land power from the 13th Amendment.

“We will launch our campaign on June 3 from Kelaniya with the blessings of the Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero. We request the people to join us and sign the petition,”NFF member Piyasiri Wijenayake told a news conference.

He said campaign carried out countrywide and end at the Presidential Secretariat on June 12.

“Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who is also the NFF leader, will hand over the petition to the presidential secretary,” Mr. Wijenayake said and highlighted the need for a public referendum to resolve matters connected to the 13th Amendment.

Mr. Wijenayake said they hoped that President MahindaRajapaksa won’t betray the country by holding the elections to the Northern Provincial Council.(Lahiru Pothmulla)
