Nine students were injured, two of them seriously, following a clash between two groups of students of the Ruhunu University today.

The injured students had been admitted to the Matara General Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital said seven of them were out of danger.

Police said the students of the Management Faculty were involved in the clash and that they had used bicycle chains, iron bars and bottles in the assault. It is alleged that an altercation between a group of students affiliated to the General Students Union and a group of independent students had resulted in the clash.

The independent students said the General Students Union was attempting to enroll them into their union by force. However the President of the Union who rejected this allegation said a group of student who deserted the union to support the government for personal gains had assaulted the members of the students union causing injuries to six of them.
